Phishing

Never give out confidential information like your password, social security number or account numbers - especially online. Or if over the phone, only if you initiated the contact. Unsolicited requests for your confidential information is called "phishing." For more information, go to: How Not to Get Hooked by a Phishing Scam.

Beware of the following:

  • Demanding messages emphasizing an urgent response on your part.
  • Messages instructing you to confirm your personal information; i.e., Social Security number, credit or check card numbers, passwords, etc.
  • Any kind of request for any of your personal identity numbers or other types of personal information like birthdays and your Mother's maiden name.
  • Misspellings and sloppy wording.
  • E-mailed instructions to download software - something we'll never ask you to do.
  • Website links that will take you to fake web sites, instead of the legitimate site you expected. Rather than click on the sender's link, type the URL into your browser.

Phishing Examples:

  • An e-mail message stating that your Bank's customers have been experiencing a large number of identity theft attempts, then asking you to click a link and confirm your identity.
  • An e-mail informing you that there will be a charge to your account for some official-sounding reason, and that you should click a link if you wish to decline this transaction or charge.
  • An e-mail request purportedly from the FDIC, any financial institution, or website, asking you to set up a secure on-line network code to protect against credit card fraud by providing personal financial or other information.

These are just a few of the kinds of phishing attempts out there.

Please note, this Bank will never request any kind of confidential or personal information - even if it looks authentic - over non-secure channels. If ever in doubt, call our Customer Service Center at 888-225-4636.

Report Online Fraud

If you received suspicious e-mail that looked like it came from Cape Cod Five, please notify us by forwarding that e-mail to reportfraud@capecodfive.com (please do not open any attachments or click any links found in the suspicious e-mail).

Also, we suggest that you forward it to the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov, or you may contact them at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or 877.IDTHEFT (877.438.4338).

Important - If you responded to a fraudulent e-mail and provided personal or account information, immediately contact Cape Cod Five's Customer Service Center at 888-225-4636. Since this could also impact your accounts at other financial institutions, you should contact them too.

Identity Theft

Again, it's important that you protect the confidentiality of your personal information. Keep confidential details such as your driver's license and Social Security numbers off of your checks. Avoid using easily available numbers like your birthday, phone number, or social security number as your password or PIN, and don't keep such numbers in your wallet or purse. There is considerable specific information on how to protect your identity and on what to do if you may be a victim of identity theft at Take Charge: Fighting Back Against Identity Theft.

Tips for Safeguarding Your Accounts:

  • Store your checks and financial documents in a secure place.
  • Regularly pick up your incoming mail and report missing bills, statements, etc.
  • Create strong passwords (using a combination of numbers, letters and punctuation) that you can remember.
  • Install a firewall and anti-virus programs.
  • As it's made available, keep your software up-to-date.
  • Always back up your important files and folders, and store your back-ups in a safe place.

Fraud Schemes

Ignore requests to send or receive money on behalf of a government agency, a company or an individual, no matter how attractive the offer.

Fake Check Scams

Here’s a list of consumer tips to avoid fake check scams:

  • Never agree to pay to claim a prize.
  • Never agree to pay for grants from the government or foundations.
  • Never agree to cash checks and send the money somewhere as part of a job working from home.
  • Never agree to wire money to anyone you have not met in person and known for a long time.
  • If it seems suspicious, get advice.

You can learn more on this by going to www.fakechecks.org  or  fake check scams .

Take the E-Mail Safety Test

To stay on the safe side, simply run these questions through your mind before opening an e-mail message.

  • Do you know the sender?
  • Have you safely received e-mails from this sender before?
  • Were you expecting an e-mail with an attachment from this sender?
  • Does it make logical sense that the sender would send you the e-mail, especially if it offers an attachment or link?
  • Could it contain a virus? The only way you will know this is to have an anti-virus program installed.

Best Practices to protect your computer system

The following are best practices that you should take to protect your computer system:

  • Verify that security patches, anti-virus, and anti-spyware software are kept up to date
  • Ensure that you have a firewall that is properly configured
  • Never open a suspicious email
  • Be especially wary of opening files that end in .exe
  • Safeguard your password
  • Encrypt the hard drive of your laptop to protect contents in case it is lost or stolen
  • If you are using a wireless connection:
    • Change the default network name (SSID) and password
    • Avoid connecting to a public Wi-Fi location
