What a contactless payment is and how it works
A contactless payment allows you to pay "touch-free" by tapping or hovering your debit card at checkout, rather than swiping the debit card or inserting it into a chip reader.

Contactless payments use a special technology, called Near Field Communication (NFC), to complete the transaction. An NFC antenna inside the debit card chip communicates with the contactless enabled card reader.
  • Why make a contactless payment?
  1. It's secure — Enjoy the same security as chip cards used at chip-enabled terminals because each contactless transaction uses a one-time security code to protect your payment information.
  2. It's easy — Transactions are smoother than ever with fewer surfaces to touch. Simply tap your debit card on the checkout terminal to make a purchase.
  3. It's fast — Your debit card is read in seconds, so there's less waiting to remove your card from a chip terminal.

  • How do I make a contactless payment?
Hold your contactless debit card near the card reader, typically near the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol graphic .  The debit card needs to be no further than 2 inches from the Contactless Symbol on the terminal or it can’t be read. A transaction typically takes 1-2 seconds to complete.

  • How can I get a Cape Cod 5 contactless debit card?
Contactless debit cards are available at any of Cape Cod 5’s Banking Center locations.  You can go to CapeCodFive.com/appointment and use the online appointment scheduling to request a new debit card be ready for you to pick up at the Banking Center location of your choice.

  • Do I need to use the contactless functionality for all purchases?
No, you can chose to insert, swipe or tap your debit card for each transaction. Every payment terminal has specific payment options, so you may have to insert or swipe your debit card if contactless is not available on the terminal.

  • If I have a contactless card, could I end up making payments I didn't intend to?
Contactless technology requires the card’s chip to be within two inches of the terminal to read it. It cannot read a chip that is further away. Because of this, it is recommended that when paying, you hold out just the debit card and not your entire wallet. Your wallet could contain multiple chips and lead to the wrong card being read by the terminal.
How to use a contactless card
  • What is the best way to position the contactless card when making a payment?
It is best to extend the end of the debit card with the chip in it.  Contactless-enabled merchant terminals read the debit card best when the card is held flat over the Contactless Symbol. Tapping the edge or corner of the debit card to the terminal may not be as effective.

  • How do I know if my debit card is contactless enabled?
Look for the Contactless Indicator contactless symbol graphic on the front or back of your debit card to determine if it's capable of contactless payments.  If you don't see the symbol, you can still use the debit card by inserting or swiping it.

  • How do I know if a merchant terminal is contactless capable?
Look for the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol graphic on merchant terminals to determine if they are capable of accepting contactless payments. You can make a contactless payment with your contactless card wherever you see the symbol.

  • Will I need to input my PIN or provide a signature?
This is the merchant’s decision. Some merchants may require you enter your PIN, others may require a signature, and some may not ask for either. In all cases, the transaction uses a one-time security code to protect your payment.

  • Can I use my contactless card in a digital wallet?
Yes, you can add any Cape Cod 5 debit card into your device’s digital wallet to make contactless payments. Both contactless cards and digital wallets use secure NFC technology to complete the transaction. Click here for more information about Digital Payments

Look for the Contactless Symbol contactless symbol graphic on merchant terminals to determine if they are capable of accepting contactless payments. You can make a contactless payment with your contactless card wherever you see the symbol.

  • Why is my contactless transaction not working?

Security features
  • Are contactless payments secure?
Yes, for each physical transaction, your contactless debit card chip securely transmits a unique one-time "digital" card number that encrypts your debit card information. The one-time "digital" card number ties back to your debit card number, allowing you to complete the transaction while keeping your actual card number safe and secure.

  • Can my contactless card be cloned and used by a thief fraudster?
Along with the account number, a one-time security code is sent from the card to the payment terminal to identify that transaction. Since the card does not send your name, the 3- digit code on the back of the card or your billing address using the contactless interface, the thief won't have the information needed to conduct payment transactions, either in person, on the phone or online.

  • Will contactless cards prevent all fraud from happening?
No, as the industry continues to develop new ways to protect consumers, criminals continue to develop new ways to commit fraud—which is why the fraud prevention monitoring we provide is important. Contactless and EMV chip debit cards provide an additional layer of security when used at contactless-enabled and chip-enabled terminals.

  • Will contactless cards prevent merchant compromise?
Contactless and EMV chip technology provides an additional layer of security when used at contactless-enabled and chip-enabled terminals. The embedded technology may help reduce certain types of fraud that can result from third-party or merchant compromise, but it will not prevent a compromise. Chip cards use dynamic information for each transaction that is verified by the card issuer making it more difficult to capture the customer's card data and create new fraudulent debit cards that can be used elsewhere.

  • Do contactless cards allow others to track my location?
No, Contactless and EMV chip card technology is not a locator system. The technology on your card is limited to supporting authentication of debit card data when you make a purchase.
