Social Security Changes Effective March 31, 2025
How to Navigate Social Security Deposit Changes
As of March 31, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has made the process of changing direct deposit information more secure by requiring stronger proof of identity. Whether you are applying for Social Security benefits for the first time, making changes to your direct deposit details, or helping a loved one with these changes, we’ve laid out answers to frequently asked questions, so that you can have peace of mind knowing that funds will continue to be deposited without interruption.
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who do these changes apply to?
A: These changes apply to people who are applying for benefits for the first time, as well as to those already receiving benefits who need to update their direct deposit details.
Q: Do I need to do anything if I'm already receiving benefits and not changing my bank information?
A: No action is required if your direct deposit information is not changing. Your monthly Social Security payments will continue as scheduled and your benefits will remain uninterrupted.
Q: Do I need to prove my identity to keep receiving my current benefits?
A: No additional proof of identity is needed; it is only required if you are changing your direct deposit information or applying for benefits for the first time.
Q: How can I apply for benefits or update my direct deposit information?
A: The easiest and most secure way to update this information is online through your personal “my Social Security account” at www.ssa.gov/myaccount. If you are unable to complete the process online, scheduling an in-person appointment at your local Social Security office is the next best option. To complete the process online, you will need your cell phone to verify your phone number and access to your email to confirm your account.
Q: What if I need to close the bank account where my benefits are currently deposited?
A: We are happy to work with you to ensure a smooth transition. If you are receiving your Social Security benefits in a Cape Cod 5 account, and that account needs to be closed, we will help set up your new account and make sure your funds continue to be deposited without interruption until your information is updated with the Social Security Administration.
