Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School plans to teach the following skills to our senior class:

• Financial management – budgeting, financing your education, money & roommates, staying out of debt, cars and loans, savings, investing, understanding your pay check, financial responsibility
• Time Management – organizational skills, planning, productivity, stress management, meeting deadlines
• Building Credit, Credit Cards and loans – protecting your identity, why credit matters, consumer awareness, interest rates
• Social Skills – communication, teamwork and collaboration, etiquette and good manners, public speaking, good character, negotiating

The School Counseling staff seeks financial support from Cape Cod Five’s Mini Grant to establish a series of large group presentations on the topics outline above to enhance the work we are already doing with seniors in small group and individual meetings. We will plan four workshops, each for 90 minutes, where the students will hear from one of more community representatives on a selected topic. The format of the event will reflect a professional development model so students can feel valued and respected as young adults in our UCT community. Students will be encouraged to dress for this professional event.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The large presentation will be a springboard for further discussion in the small group classroom where students will focus on their individual transition plan to attend college, enter the workforce or military careers.

Benefit to the students and the school

Qualitative feedback from our recent graduates and parents of current and former students indicates there is not enough time dedicated to preparing students for living independently. These practical life skills are of significant value to any student pursuing college, going directly into the work force or joining our military. These are basic skills that will have a major impact on determining how we navigate our future independently and successfully.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

We plan to implement this project during school year 2016-2017.
